What is Equalskills ? Equalskills is a fun, informal and simple introduction to computers and the Internet for complete beginners. It is being established by the British Computer Society as a fast but informative introduction to using computers.
Who is Equalskills for? Equalskills is specifically designed for those with no experience whatsoever of computers and is open to everyone regardless of status, education, age, ability or understanding. I'm not very confident about my reading skills, does the course involve textbooks? No worries! Using computers is a very visual experience. The Internet itself (apart from pages like this!) is also often visually based. But I don’t know anything about computers. In fact, they make me nervous… Great! You are exactly the person this programme has been designed for. Equalskills has been designed especially to teach complete beginners about computers and the Internet in a simple and straightforward manner. Equalskills is an enjoyable ice-breaker for anyone who may be afraid of computers or may feel that it’s too late to learn about them. Because Equalskills is so easy-to-use and based on common sense, it helps build your confidence and remove any anxieties you may have about using a computer.
I’ve done fine so far without using a computer or surfing the Internet, why do I need to know about this now? Nowadays computers and the Internet are a big part of everyday life. This is a trend that is set to continue as computers are definitely here to stay. Anyone who doesn’t get involved is missing out on a valuable resource and will eventually get left behind. But this needn’t be the case. Like everything in life, computers and the Internet are actually very simple to use when you know how.
What will the Equalskills programme teach me? Basically, the Equalskills programme will give you an idea of what all the fuss is about. It will give you an appreciation of what a computer can do and what you can do with the Internet.
The Equalskills programme covers the four following sections: Section One : Computer Basics Parts of the Computer Getting Started The keyboard Using the Mouse
Section Two: Indroduction to the Desktop Desktop Windows Creating a document File Types
Section Three: The World Wide Web The WWW Web Browser Searching
Section Four: Email Email Accouts Messages
How is Equalskills taught? You work through a course that consists of simple and straightforward exercises and learning information. You will have a tutor who will help you work and deal with any problems you may encounter. You will also carry out a number of exercises on the Internet. On completion of the programme, you will be encouraged to use the computers at Kinesis as a reminder of the skills you have acquired.
How long will it take me to complete the Equalskills programme? The programme will take between 8 and 15 hours of training, at Kinesis we shall run the programme over 2 days.
Would I have to do an exam? No. We know how intimidating exams and tests can sometimes be, so there is no formal exam at the end of the Equalskills programme. Instead, your tutor will assess you on an on-going project basis during the programme.
Will I be able to get a job with my Equalskills qualification? The programme is not intended as a certification leading to employment but rather it gives you an exposure to basic computing and explains the use and role of technology in everyday life. By the time you complete the Equalskills programme you will be able to send an email, use some simple computer applications and surf the Web to look for information on news, weather or hobbies. Equalskills provides a friendly, fun and simple introduction to computer and Internet use. Once you have completed it, you can move on to more advanced programmes and eventually to full ECDL certification, if you choose. |
